Famous Faces, Ridiculous Places: TheatreSports Serves Up a Comedy Circus!

When: 27/9/2026

Celebrity TheatreSports 2026 is glorious theatrical madness, where split-second genius, spectacular silliness and celebrity dignity collide, all in the name of a bloody good cause. Living up to its billing as The Gala Impro Comedy Event of the Year, it was an absolute ripper, with outrageous scenarios and comic curveballs keeping the belly laughs rolling.

According to the highly authoritative, never-questioned source that is Wikipedia, TheatreSports is “a form of improvisational theatre in which teams create scenes on the spot.” Technically correct, but that hardly prepares anyone for the reality. Imagine a show where nobody knows what happens next. No, I’m not talking about a Sydney train timetable. One minute, a performer is teaching a tiger to knit; the next, they’re abandoning the family farm to swing from a trapeze or hyperventilating in a bank vault while swapping characters every 20 seconds. With no scripts or safety net, these fearless performers rely on quick wits and creative nerve.

Impro Australia has spent decades putting the impro into improbable since day one, but throw a few celebrities into the mix and the fun really begins. The line-up featured familiar faces including Rob Mills, numbers man Adam Spencer, magician James Galea and Andrew Redmayne, AKA the Grey Wiggle. Fame might get you recognised, but it won’t help when you’re playing a premature corpse test driving your own coffin at an ecstasy-fuelled rave (yes, that actually happened!). It’s that unpredictability that makes TheatreSports so addictive.

With Jeromaia Detto and Jane Simmons as our quick-witted, mischief-making ringmasters, Celebrity TheatreSports delivered ALL the goods. Nothing sharpens comic instincts like six teams chomping for Cup bragging rights, with props flying, egos on the line and musical maestro Benny Davis improvising the soundtrack. Theatre nerd alert: my improv-loving heart gave a little flutter when Lyn Pierse, the woman who literally wrote the book on the subject, made a grand entrance in feathers. Imagine having your improvisational technique judged by someone with that pedigree! Kudos to the performers for their sheer balls of steel.

“Gee whillikers! This show is an absolute riot: gloriously bonkers and proof that sometimes the best comedy happens when absolutely nobody has a clue what they’re doing.”

The challenges came thick and fast, requiring performers to conjure characters, scenarios and increasingly questionable life choices out of thin air. Trying to describe the highlights of the lunacy of TheatreSports is like explaining a fever dream with a hangover – the more detail you give, the more unhinged it sounds. So, here goes my best shot:

Bunch of Clowns: TheatreSports legend Daniel Cordeaux’s face on hearing they had to perform a “Group Song About Pickleball”. Cue instant artistic commitment and a cry for legal representation. 73-year-old Gladys saved the day.

The Fairy Flossers: A worker falls in love with the showroom motorcycle on company time and is bailed up by HR. Naturally, true love prevailed, workplace policies were presumably breached, and everyone rode off into the sunset dressed in pink.

Panda-monium: Gloriously fabricated French and animals flirting and, I believe, arranging hook-ups. Murray Fahey and Linette Voller were in their element amid the linguistic lunacy. No idea what the hell was going on, but the animal kingdom had definitely gone très rogue.

Big Top Guns: The game was all about saying the things you absolutely cannot say out loud, with a brave audience member’s text messages providing the context. Finally, a group chat with an invested audience!

Greatest Show Ponies: A name full of flair, a queer Bard in the mix. Now that’s how you give Shakespeare a twist!

Socceroo Sideshow: 1. Group therapy took a turn for the theatrical, with emotional baggage transformed into ballet, complete with an elegant pas de deux and impressive splits. Andrew Redmayne pulled it off in trackies. Someone get this man a medal. 2. Then came Human Puppets in a film noir mystery that had me more invested than any Thunderbirds detective drama has a right to. I still have questions. The whistle blew on a cliffhanger. Cup champions? Case closed. Congrats, team!

The real fun was watching people from wildly different worlds make the absurd seem perfectly more absurd. From trembling sports virgins to veterans who’ve been making fools of themselves for years, everyone was outside their comfort zone. First-timer Rob Mills looked ready to swap the stage for his local pub during the first 10 minutes, but soon surrendered to the madness, ending up as a decapitated seahorse in a submarine skit. His best role yet? 😉

Six teams. One Cup. Countless reasons to question everyone’s sanity.
The faces say it all. The backstory is anyone’s guess.

I’ll pause my gentle (but highly enjoyable) heckling to acknowledge that every performer and crew member gave their time pro bono for Canteen. Just before interval, Canteen ambassadors Joshua Bell and Tynielle Gomez shared their stories, reminding everyone why they had come together. A good cause can inspire generosity almost as quickly as TheatreSports inspires a roar of hilarity. Supporting Canteen was the real win. But dammit, I really wanted to win the raffle for that Ramsay Street sign. It would have looked brilliant above my Neighbours shrine.

Gee whillikers! This show is an absolute riot: utterly bonkers and proof that sometimes the best comedy happens when absolutely nobody has a clue what they’re doing.Missed this one? Next time, be there! TheatreSports is cheaper than therapy, considerably more entertaining and guaranteed to leave you laughing like a drain. And if that’s not enough – a rubber horse’s head might even make an appearance. Boom tish!
